Silk Hope Weekly Events 5/3/15
Reading Rocks
We are now entering the 2nd week of Reading Rocks. We hope you contacted family and friends last week to secure pledges. This week we want your child to record the number of minutes they are reading each day.  Make sure you complete and sign the reading log nightly.  Bring it to school each day to receive a prize! Pledge sheets, reading logs, and prize information can be found below. You can help your child this week by encouraging them to increase the amount of time they are reading each day.

Staff Appreciation Week
This week is Staff Appreciation Week .The PTA would like to remind parents to send donations for the daily raffle.  Also, snacks of any kind, which will be placed in the teacher’s lounge, are always a welcomed treat for Silk Hope School teachers and staff.  Any raffle donations or snacks should be labeled for teacher appreciation and can be delivered to the front office.
 
Upcoming Events for the Week Include
  • There will be a orientation meeting for parents of rising kindergarten students, specifically for those who have never had a child attend school, Monday at 5:30 in the Media Center.
  • There will be a PTA Thrift Shop Work Night Monday at 6:30. This night has not been designated for a class or club so volunteers are needed.  Come out and help Mrs. Mattie Jean, our Thrift Shop Queen, earn valuable hours for Silk Hope School. 
  • Kindergarten will be traveling to the NC Zoo Tuesday.
  • The boys baseball and girls soccer teams will be hosting Chatham Middle Tuesday and will be traveling to Bonlee Thursday. Make plans to come out and support the Eagles! All games begin at 4:15.
  • 8th Graders will be traveling to the NC Museum of Life & Science in Durham Thursday.
  • 3rd Graders will be traveling to the Morehead Planetarium Friday.
  • The Jr. Beta Club will be sponsoring a dance Friday from 7-9pm. Admission is $5.
 
Looking Ahead:
  • Volunteers are invited to join us for an appreciation breakfast May 14 at 8:30am.
  • The Athletic Banquet will be May 14 at 7pm in the Multipurpose Room. All athletes and their families are invited to attend.
  • The Drama Class will be performing May 15 at 9am, 1pm, and 7pm. We hope you can join us for one of musical performances of “There’s A Monster In My Closet.” Admission is free.

Congratulations to Ginger Clark, our Instructional Assistant of the Year and Karen McLaurin, our bus driver of the year. We are so grateful to them for the work they do for our students each day.

It’s that time again…time to Rock Out and READ during our annual Reading Rocks PTA fundraiser.  Students will receive their information packets Monday which will include pledge sheets, reading logs, prize information, and important dates. Building Healthy Students Together
Please come and join us for at the Healthy Kids Night on May 1st from 4-7pm at Bray Park in Siler City. There will be inflatables, food trucks, and representatives from various community organizations.  We will be promoting a healthy lifestyle as well as promoting our area schools to the students and families in the Siler City area.

5k for Family Peace
The 5k For Family Peace will be held on May 2nd in Siler City, beginning and ending at the National Guard Armory. K-5th grade students can run/walk the 5K for $8.00 plus 5 cans donated to the West Chatham Food Pantry or for $15.00 with no cans.  Middle School students can participate for $18.   This will be a great event for those students who enjoy the Turkey Trot!  If interested, click here for a brochure and information regarding online registration. Information for Rising Kindergarteners

 here for information  pertaining to orientation, kindergarten screening, and staggered entry. If you have questions, please contact the school and someone will assist you.  
 
Volunteer Application Information
We love our volunteers at SHS!  Anyone wishing to tutor, be a classroom helper, chaperone field trips, etc must fill out an online application through the AppGarden site.  As a reminder, volunteers must resubmit an application each school year.
 
You can access the site here.  If you are new to the site you will need to click on the green link at the bottom to register.  If you have an account with AppGarden you do not need to create a new account.  You will just need to log in and update your profile.  

Please note the criminal background checks may take several weeks to process so please complete the application as soon as possible.
 
School Improvement Team Meeting Dates
The School Improvement Team will meet on the 3rd Monday of each month with the exception of January (there will be no meeting) and March (we will meet on the 4th Monday) in the Media Center. Parents and other stakeholders are welcome to attend. 
 
Reward the School When You Shop
It is easy to support the school when you shop. If you shop at Harris Teeter, link your rewards card to Silk Hope and the school will receive money/rewards.
